Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The cold winter months are notorious for packing on some winter weight and our 4-legged friends are no different.
Vets say a fourth of their doggy patients put on some extra pounds every winter.
To make up for a sedentary winter lifestyle, veterinarians recommend controlling your pet's food portions and limiting Fido's treats.
Obesity can put dogs at risk for diabetes, liver disease or joint and bone issues.
And much like people, vets say pets should ease into an active summer lifestyle.
Dr. Kevin Dill/Veterinarian, Animal Health Clinic: “when they're busy all of a sudden, they're going to have some aches and pains and are going to be a little bit more prone to injury just because they're not fit. So if you're starting with walking or running with them, as you would for yourself, you just start off with incremental increases in activity.”
If your pet is severely overweight... consult your vet to make sure the cause isn't something more serious.
