Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) - Sunday is the start of national police week.
First signed into law in 1962 by President John F Kennedy, this week honors the service and sacrifice of police officers throughout the nation.
Since 1791 there have been over 20,000 law enforcement officer deaths in the line of duty nationwide.
During that time, 50 peace officers have died in North Dakota.
Lt. BJ Maxson/ Grand Forks Sheriff’s Department: "It's a time when nationwide we can take a step back and remember brothers and sisters that have given their lives in the line of duty."
On Tuesday a memorial service will be held at the Grand Forks County Courthouse.
