Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Some of the work for the marathon was done months ago.

But some of the heavy lifting can't be done until, the last minute, like Friday.

You can definitely tell that this isn't the first Marathon here in Fargo, because most of the heavy lifting is already done, but there's still more to do before the people behind the scenes, can breathe a sigh of relief.

Lt. Joel Vettel/ Fargo Police: "Everyone in the city of Fargo will be touched by the marathon tomorrow."

Those who aren't a part of it will feel it especially when it comes to traffic and road closures.

Crews setup most of the no parking and road closed signs Thursday, with police enforcing those today.

Vettel: “We need to get vehicles off the roadway, get those areas taken care of. I know it's a little bit inconvenient even this early into the weekend."

But it's for the convenience of setup crews. With one of the most critical components of the Marathon, a must have for runners and observers alike, needing the space to be setup Medical Village.

Downtown isn't the only part of the route getting TLC today. Crews are working up to the last minute setting up the stage and Island Park for the finish of the 5k, and the celebration after.

Mark Knutson/ Fargo Marathon Director: "Setting up the course, making sure the volunteers are in place for the 5K tonight. Even with 3.1 miles we need a ton of volunteers. We're cleaning streets. Checking on the Elm Street Bowl to make sure it’s not flooded still."

Both race organizers and police say the months of planning have paid off, but it's always a rat race at the end.

Vettel: “It's kind of a mad rush."

Once these 5k'ers start crossing the finish line, we'll get a better idea if all the planning for the 10th Fargo Marathon pays off.
