Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - To hop on an Amtrak train in Fargo you'll need to be up between 1 and 4 in the morning, then once you’re at the station, the train's actual arrival time can be a crap-shoot.

Visiting town Thursday, Amtrak CEO Joe Boardman and Mayor Walaker told media that they believe congress should fully fund operating costs and capital needs for long distance trains like the Empire Builder, which serves much of North Dakota and Minnesota.

The pair believes that airlines and busses tend to ignore some of the nation's smaller towns, but the trains need some extra resources in order to pick up the slack.

Dennis Walaker/Fargo Mayor: “You can't keep cutting without making investment in the future. Because the only people we're cutting in the future is our children.”

Boardman and Walker think that with better financial backing Amtrak will be able to expand its services throughout North Dakota, and even start showing up on schedule.
