Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Students from Bennett Elementary are getting ready to run the 5-K.

They're training and helping kids, on the other side of the globe.

The idea was born when two boys traveled to Africa and they saw children their own age, who had no books.

"Anyone want to donate a dollar?"

Carter Wride along with his buddies Nate and Gabe Gronneberg are learning some valuable lessons about business, stamina, and giving to others.

For the last several days, the students at Bennett have been collecting money in exchange for a T-shirt autograph. All the funds going to buy books for children in Ethiopia, Nate and Gabe have traveled there with their mother, and know the need.

Nate Gronneberg/Bennett Student: “Some of them are like, poor so, we are raising money for books so they can read and get educated.”

The fundraiser ties in with Bennett's fun and fitness, marathon training project. Many of the kids have been running in preparation for the run later this week.

All the while, raising money for the kids in Ethiopia.

Sheri Schulz/Bennett Teacher: “Kids have so much empathy and it is great to give them the opportunity to develop that.”

Cindy Varriano/Bennett Teacher: “Their hearts go out to kids all they want to do is help and they are kids they have never met them, just heard about them, it is very sweet.”

Some of the kids have more than 40-signatures on their backs, meaning a lot of dollars rolling in for the book project,

“It makes me feel really great.”
