Kat Perkins wasn’t the only singer from North Dakota on “The Voice” on Tuesday.
Country artist Gwen Sebastian returned to the NBC talent show as a mentor for musician hopefuls on Team Blake. The night was filled with covers from the top eight finalists, all singing for votes to move them on to the next round.
Sebastian gave tips to country artist Blake Shelton’s singers Jake Worthington, Audra McLaughlin and Sisaundra Lewis.
“I’ve been in (Lewis’) shoes and she is proof that it is never too late to be a star,” Sebastian said of Perkins.
Sebastian, a Hebron, N.D., native, was a contestant on the show’s second season in 2012, where she chose Blake to coach her. She was eliminated during the battle round but toured with Shelton and his wife, Miranda Lambert.
Sebastian and Shelton performed his hit single “My Eyes” before Perkins, took the stage.
Perkins, a Scranton, N.D., native who now lives in the Twin Cities, who has been dubbed “The Rocking Nanny,” made her weekly appearance by singing Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.”
Last week, Perkins was in the bottom three but received the “Instant Save” when voters saved her in the last five minutes of the show.
“I’m going to kill it,” she told Adam Levine, her coach and the lead singer of Maroon 5.
The Minneapolis-based rocker put her own edge on the techno song, leaving her coach and the crowd screaming. Perkins built up the hit and exploded during the chorus not only with her voice but with jumps and flying fireballs.
“That had to be fun,” Shakira said. “I saw you jumping up and down up there. I never saw that Kat Perkins before.”
Levine said the two had to go big this week, but the idea was all Perkins’, adding he just facilitated it.
“Bottom three, my ass,” Levine said. “You just did a heavy metal version of a Daft Punk song in the coolest way.
“There is nothing that wasn’t amazing about that performance. I’m on fire.”
Only five singers will move on to the next round. Those names will be announced tonight when the show airs at 6 p.m.
Viewers can vote for Perkins or any other singer by buying their songs on iTunes or by voting at nbc.com/thevoice.
