Barnesville, MN (WDAY TV) - Hundreds of people danced the day away in Barnesville at a Polka Fest.

The Galaxie Sports Bar in Barnesville is taking advantage of a renovation project to get the feet moving.

It doesn't matter what kind of dance.

Irene Klemetson is doing.

She just loves that old-time music.

Irene Klemetson/Ulen: "My folks were dancers, so I grew up dancing."

And she's not the only one here who feels that way.

Hundreds danced the day away at a polka fest in Barnesville's Galaxie Sports Bar.

The marathon of movement started at 10:30 in the morning, and ended at nine o'clock at night.

Dennis Zinger/Frazee: "Different bands, you get to know a lot of people you know and meet more people too."

Klemetson: "Its good exercise, good therapy for all of us."

You'd never guess that just a few weeks ago, this space was filled with old, unused bowling lanes.

Leah Thompson and her father David Stetz, turned what used to be a bowling alley into a liquor store last year.

But some of the alley was still there, hidden in back.

After they tore out all the lanes, they were left with wide open space that they plan to eventually rent to another business.

In the meantime, they decided to have some fun with it.

Leah Thompson/Manager: "I'm talking with the older crowd, and I said hey, if we get that cleared out, do you want to have a polka fest? Well, the next thing I know, they were all gung-ho and they wanted to have a party."

These events are becoming more and more scarce, as interest in these traditional dances isn't what it used to be.

Thompson: "The younger generation just isn't doing it. They're just not into these dances and they're fading. So, it is important for this group to have."

If you missed it, don't worry.

The Galaxie has old-time dancing every Sunday from 3-7, and starting May 22nd, they'll also have it on Thursdays.
