West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) – Friday, state high schoolers competed for a shot at nationals.

It's not your typical extra-curricular activity, but these students trained all year for the state auto skills competition.

Ten two person teams competed at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds to diagnose and repair uniformly bugged vehicles.

Judges scored the teams on speed and quality of workmanship.

Many of these students plan to pursue auto repair full-time after high school.

And this generation of mechanics has the background to match the changing auto industry.

Gene Ladoucer/AAA Spokesman: "Without that technology background and interest, in addition to the mechanical skills that many of us grew up with understanding, you can't make it in this career field."

Fargo South came out on top, Derek Bartholomay and George VanBuren will be representing North Dakota at the national competition in June.
