Mayville, ND (WDAY TV) - There's only one movie theatre in Mayville.
And when films switched to digital files, it couldn't afford to stay open.
Locals had to make a trip to and from Grand Forks to see a movie.
But Thursday night, the Del-Char Theatre is re-opening under new ownership, and lots of help from the community.
In a town of 1800, entertainment can be hard to come by.
So when the Del-Char Theatre shut down in December, the town was devastated.
Brooke Higdom/Maywood Resident: “I heard that it was closing down and I was really sad.”
But Steve Larson, the former owner, wanted to keep the theatre alive, so he put the 77-year-old landmark on the market, for a dollar. Low enough to draw “plenty of attention.”
Dave Torgeson/Theatre Co-Owner: “I bothered him on a daily basis and asking him "have you made a decision, have you made a decision?"
David Torgeson always dreamed of owning movie theatre, so he and wife Heather jumped at the opportunity.
Active members in the community and employed by the local high school, they raised over $30,000 won the chance to turn over one of those dollars and buy the theater.
Torgeson: “I'm nervous but I'm excited, you know if something goes wrong, it goes wrong, you know we can get it taken care of.”
Without the Del-Char, locals would have to travel 80 miles round trip to Grand Forks in order to catch a flick. Needless to say, the owners expect this place to be a hit.
Heather Torgeson: “I'm hoping for a little bit of craziness, lots of people, it'd be wonderful if we had a sold out show.”
The premiere of Spider-Man 2 at the Del-Char should be wrapping up right about now, and early reports say it was a hit.
