Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The United Way of Cass Clay is celebrating May Day with a different kind of basket.

Thursday, women from the non-profit's Women's Council delivered May Day Baskets-of-Books to pre-kindergarten kids.

They brought more than a thousand books will be to 14 different child care centers.

The volunteers read stories to the children as part of an effort to promote early childhood literacy.

Kara Kalbus/Chair, United Way Basket of Books Event: "Education really starts, really before a child is born. But especially at that early childhood age. That's when those kids' brains form the fastest and it's really important to get those books in their hands before they go to kindergarten."

The event is part of United Way's Imagination Library program.

That program mails a book per month to almost 9,000 kids nation-wide.
