Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - Jim Goata Stadium has served Moorhead High well since its opening in 2000, but Father Time and Mother Nature have done their best to wear down the facility.
This is one of the final days that the stadium will look like this as the school is moving forward with a renovation project.
The makeover begins next week, with the demolition of the track, and the peeling out of the grass field.
From there, a new track and field complex will be installed, along with a brand new Sprint Turf surface for the football field.
The 1.5 million dollar project will give Moorhead athletics a face-lift and erase some frustrations brought on by Mother Nature.
Dean Haugo/ Moorhead Athletic Director: “We look at it as in the fall when we have rainy or snowy conditions it will maintain itself. We'll be able to host playoff games without having the concern of a worn out field, both for football and for soccer. It will also be nice for things such as state quarterfinal games, which we're trying to get access to. Then you look at the spring, and I think we've really seen in the Red River Valley this year Concordia, Shanley, and others that have turf fields using those for home softball sites. It will really allow us to extend our home softball season back to whenever the snow leaves. It is a very large change in how we will program.”
Haugo says the turf should be installed by late July, while the completion of the track will come in late August.
