Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - A bill to end online gambling has the green light from the Minnesota House Commerce Committee
The bill's main target is the state lottery.
For the past several years, Minnesota residents haven't even needed to step outside to get their lottery fix in, and can order tickets at home with a touch of a button on a computer, smartphone or tablet.
Many worry that the extensive availability to online gambling can lead to new addictions, as well as make old ones more difficult to overcome.
Lisa Vig/ Gambling Counselor: “For those who are struggling with gambling addiction, the easy accessibility, the opportunities to do it from your phone, from your car, from home, from work. Just kind of compound the action that a compulsive gambler is drawn to.”
While easy-access gambling is dangerous to some, the state relies on the money it produces, and could cost Minnesota $8 million a year if the program is shut down.
