Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) - Students and faculty at Valley City State University remembered a fallen friend tonight. Hundreds turned up for a public vigil in the University's Fieldhouse.

The bleachers filled with people mourning the loss of Dan Beuhner, a senior baseball player who died in a rafting accident on the Sheyenne River Monday.

It's a loss that has devastated the entire community. Students wrote words of remembrance on their way in to tonight's public vigil.

Many showed up in Vikings gear, uniting as one grieving campus.

Kayl Hamre/Dan’s Teammate: "He would want all of us, the student body, the faculty, the community to laugh and to listen and to remember the times that we got to spend with him."

Casey Olney/Dan’s Coach: "Dan is and always will be a member of the VCSU and Viking baseball family. We've lost a member of our family too soon. He will always be loved, missed, and remembered."

University president Steven Shirley pointed out that even student athletes from other teams traveled to be at tonight's vigil.

And that the crowd speaks volumes about the impact Dan had on the people around him.
