Pelican Rapids, MN (WDAY TV) - For many, it's not a pleasant conversation, talking or even thinking about the time our lives will come to an end.
But one Pelican Rapids man wants to take weight off such a heavy topic, opening the towns first club to talk about dying.
Don Rapske/Creating Death Cafe: "Ready or not it's going to happen."
In all of his 77 years,
Rapske: "I've been around enough it doesn't scare me."
Don Rapske has learned that life, in the afterlife, may not be so dreadful.
Rapske: "If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. I think I'm ready."
Instead of taking death so seriously, Don wants to start a conversation to cope with its coming.
Rapske: "I've had some people say, 'Ew who wants to talk about that.'"
Creating Death Café, a meeting group to talk about going under.
Rapske: "It's kind of going around the country; quite a few of the largest cities have had it."
So why not small town Pelican Rapids: inside the Welcome Place.
Rapske: "We're going to do it, we're going to try it."
Kay: Don says too often people few death as such a dark topic. But listen to his laugh… hahaha So he plans to keep the mood light at his meetings.
Rapske: “Might even throw a joke or two in there.”
Even though Don's got a few years under his belt, he's shooting for 100.
Rapske: "We don't want to dread it. We don't want to dread death. I think most of us believe in an afterlife."
And says if we're all going out the same way, why not laugh together while we're here.
Rapske: "Yeah I'm going to die… but you guys are going to die too hahaha"
The first Death Café meets the morning May 3rd at The Welcome Place in Pelican Rapids beginning at 7:30.
