Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A local food co-op trying to open a grocery store made a major push in Fargo.

Prairie Roots Food Co-op made stops throughout the F-M area today in an attempt to draw 44 new members, in honor of the 44th Earth Day.

One of those stops took place at Ecce (ETCH-AY) Art Gallery in downtown Fargo... where they shared information and demonstrated a hand crank grain grinder.

Those signing up received a complimentary co-op tote bag full of natural and organic food.

If the co-op can get 500 members signed up by July... they'll be able to open a store location in a year.

Kaye Kirsch/Membership Director, Prairie Roots Food Co-Op: "Members are going to have access to natural, organic and local food that they may not be able to find in one, convenient, easy location right now."

If the co-op reached their sign-up goal today, they'll only be about 100 shy of that July goal of 500.
