Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The West Acres Mall in Fargo prides itself on being a big draw in the community.

A draw for people, that is.

But a curious, furry intruder found its way inside this afternoon.

West Acres Mall property manager Chris Heaton told me it's extremely rare for any animal to track into the mall.

And when he thinks of possible culprits, rabbits, or maybe birds come to mind.

But a coyote was not high on his list.

That surprise, despite there being sufficient pop culture evidence painting coyotes as active consumers.

Chris Heaton/ West Acres Mall Property Manager: "You know, spring fashions are here, so maybe he was just looking for a new outfit."

But the cartoon variety usually makes purchase via mail order or at the very least they'll use the front door...

Heaton: "One of our employees was going to the restroom in the back corridor and noticed what she thought was a dog limping in through the back door."

That non-public corridor is used for deliveries and employee access to a few stores...

Heaton: "And it was just laying there very docilely while we kind of monitored it. We called Fargo Police Animal Control."

The mall told its employees to keep their access doors shut allowing animal control to evaluate the situation which led to a discovery that the coyote had a non-serious paw injury which they splinted before carting him away.

Heaton: "That was the big thing all of us were hoping for was that we could take it out alive and get it back out.”

Animal Control determined the coyote was safe to be released so they turned it loose outside of city limits.
