Cherryville, NC (CNN) - Prom is the biggest event of the year for high schoolers, but one North Carolina student says she was kicked out of her senior prom because of what she was wearing.

A pair of red jeans is at the center of a Cherryville High School prom controversy.

Shafer Rupard – Prom-Goer: "In a way it's kind of a slap in the face, because you can't get that memory back."

Shawn McQuaige: "She doesn't really have a memory of it at all. 5 minutes, 5 minutes..."

Shafer Rupard and her mother Shawn McQuaige had a great time leading up to her senior prom...

Shawn McQuaige: “Almost a tearful event because you know she's getting older. It's just the way she's always been and she wanted to feel comfortable in her own skin."

To do that, Shafer decided to wear something different to prom. Instead of a gown, she wore...

Shawn McQuaige: "Tight red pants and a black dress shirt, hat, black shoes...basically it."

She wasn't on the dance floor for five minutes, when her senior prom was ended abruptly.

Shafer Rupard: “Teacher tapped me on the shoulder. She had a problem with what I was wearing. I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like well, ‘I'll take those off’ and she was like, ‘No, it’s the pants.’"

And her mother agrees.

Shawn McQuaige: "Well, we want to put out the message to all teenagers that you should be allowed to be yourself."

And now they're trying to get a straight answer from school officials.

Shafer Rupard: "We looked in the student code of conduct book and there isn't a dress code at all."

McQuaige even talked to Cherryville's assistant principal and showed her the Gaston Schools Code of Conduct and prom invitation.

Shawn McQuaige: "She looked at it with me and she said you know what you're right - there is no dress code here."

But there is a young woman without a memory of her senior prom.

Reporters tried to get in touch with school officials, but staff and students are currently on spring break.
