Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A new era of Bison women's basketball began Thursday as Maren Walseth was introduced to the Fargo media.
Walseth knows she has a big challenge in front of her, starting with getting the right athletes to NDSU.
Maren Walseth/10th Women’s Basketball Coach in NDSU History: “It's exciting, I think it's something you always have in the back of your head that eventually be a head coach one day what got me up every day was to be the best assistant at Penn State I could be and Lynn sought me out I'm very grateful for, now it's here, I'm exciting lot of challenges.”
You mentioned that Lynn sought you out, were you looking to be a head coach or were you content to be an assistant at Penn State?
Walseth: “Very careful not to be content but very happy where I was worked hard to be best assistant I could knew one day I would be a head coach but I didn't know where or what it looked like, this presented itself more I learned and thought this is a good fit for me.”
Coming from a Big Ten school that's had a ton of success that's been to the Sweet 16 she's been near the top of the women's game?
Bree Whatman/NDSU Sophomore Guard: “Gives us a lot of hope, we're a small school, she knows how to win, in tight situations where we tend to faulted last year she'll know how to get us out of that which is good.”
You've seen in mid major women's basketball that it takes a couple players and turnaround can happen, do you see that happening here?
Walseth: “I do, there's tremendous area in the area, five state footprint, Minneapolis, Iowa, Wisconsin, there's a ton of great talent, demonstrate the future of NDSU is where they want to be.”
Walseth says she's texted with the four incoming recruits, and will be more involved with them in the next few days.
