Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - A Moorhead man in court Thursday, has officially been charged in a brutal domestic assault case.
34-year-old Michael Karau faces a long list of charges, including attempted murder.
Karau is currently in custody in Clay County, held on a $1 million bail and charged with six different felonies, ranging from attempted murder, assault, even false imprisonment.
But what authorities say led to these charges, stems from a disturbing domestic assault case.
WDAY has obtained a copy of the criminal complaint in Micheal Karau's case.
He was arrested in Clay County last Thursday, after an alleged assault in North Moorhead.
Documents say after coming home intoxicated, Karau hit, bit, and stomped on a female victim in an assault spanning several hours, and took away her phone so she could not call for help.
At times he hit her with a metal baseball bat, attempted to drown her in a bathtub, said he was going to kill her, even threatened to pour battery acid on her face.
She could not escape until Karau passed out.
When authorities talked to the victim, she was hospitalized with broken bones and vertebrae, significant bruising and torn body parts.
They found blood spatter and pools of blood at the residence, before taking Karau into custody.
In court today, they discussed another open case Karau has in Clay County, involving misdemeanor disorderly conduct and domestic assault charges.
The state plans to file an additional complaint in that case.
But both sides refused to comment today.
Karau should be back in court later this month.
He also has two prior domestic assault convictions in 2006 and 2010.
