Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - One of Fargo's most populated areas is also the most popular living spots for sex offenders.

Right now there are roughly 80 moderate and high risk sex offenders in Fargo and 75% of them live in the same general vicinity.

Carol Sullivan/Fargo: "Well I think it's a little bit uncomfortable."

Discovering where sex offenders call home in our community.

Jeff Glander/Fargo: "I can't exactly say I'm psyched about it."

Has some downtown residents worried about the neighborhood.

Glander: "Obviously it's not something you want, especially in an area as populated as this."

Especially when they find out how populated this area is, with sex offenders.

63 of 83 sex offenders listed on the city's website live in the blocks bound by 9th Avenue South and 12th Avenue North, and 25th Street and the Red River.

Lt. Joel Vettel/Fargo Police: "They're seeking, just as other people do, locations that are convenient for them."

Police say several factors are at play tental availability and affordability. Plus the number of services and employment opportunities nearby.

Vettel: "That really does push them to smaller areas where again, one property might be the only property in the area willing to rent to registered sex offenders."

Here in the 11-hundred block of 2nd Ave. South, eight moderate or high risk sex offenders live in this apartment building alone.

Sullivan: "I think people are really nervous about having sex offenders around, because of the children."

Vettel: "There is that perception that every one of the registered sex offenders violated against a child and that's not true."

Vettel says most sex offenders living in Fargo have committed crimes against other adults, not children.

Sullivan: "Either way it's a danger."

And although there's still reason to worry knowing where they're living, is much better than not knowing at all.

Vettel: "Once you understand that they're going to have to live somewhere, and if you don't allow them to live somewhere, they're going to be out."

Right now there are four sex offenders in Fargo listed as homeless.
