FARGO -– A Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews is planned for south Fargo.

Information the company provided the city on its building permit application indicates Red Robin plans to construct a new restaurant at 4159 17th Ave. S., in an area just west of the West Acres Cinema and east of Granite City.

The restaurant will have about 4,300 square feet of space and the project is valued at $900,000, according to paperwork submitted to the city.

The company released a brief statement Wednesday stating it planned to open a site in Fargo within the next year.

Red Robin offered no details about its plans, but said it is interested in coming to the area “because there is an opportunity to bring Red Robin to a new market and local community.”

According to information found online, including the company’s website:

The first Red Robin restaurant opened in the 1940s in Seattle.

The store was initially known as Sam’s Tavern.

The restaurant changed its name to Red Robin in 1969.

The brand became a franchise in 1979 and by 2008 there were 400 Red Robin restaurants.

The company now has more than 470 locations in the U.S. and Canada. About 340 of the sites are company owned and about 130 are franchise locations.

The company describes itself as a casual dining restaurant that serves more than two-dozen varieties of gourmet burgers as well as salads, sandwiches, entrees and soups.

Red Robin has its headquarters in Greenwood Village, Colo.
