FARGO – Assistant Fire Chief Steven Balstad will retire Friday after a 40-year career, making him one of only 15 employees to serve the Fargo Fire Department for that long.

Balstad started with the department in 1974, and he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1987. Continuing up the chain of command, he was named captain in 1995 and assistant chief in 2000.

He also served as acting chief from July to November 2011.

The department will hold a gathering to honor Balstad from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the main firehouse, 637 NP Ave.
