Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Warren Buffett: Watch out. Some slick Sixth grade investment gurus from Fargo's Oak Grove Lutheran are mastering the game of money managing and national media is all over their success.
The Oak Grove Wolves of Wall Street are in the spotlight after besting some of the nation's Ivy League schools in a recent stock investment competition.
Math class at Fargo's Oak Grove just got a lot more interesting and profitable.
Lately, talk of numbers has translated into a whole new lingo, investing.
Dave Carlson/ Oak Grove Math Teacher: “It is always taking risks but managing those risks.”
Motif, a nationwide money manager firm, recently challenged some of the top colleges to a competition. Who is the best money manager? Who can buy and sell like the best of them?
Here in Fargo, Oak Grove decided to do the same. The 6th graders all worked as a team to buy stock.
Priceline, Starbucks, Toyota, Netflix and together they made decisions, as a team.
Carlson: “Here they can learn to trust themselves and that they are making good decision and doing well but as well doing poorly, learning from both scenarios.”
Just how well were Oak Grove students doing? Well at one point the rate of return was at 22%, far and above some of the biggest schools in the country, Yale, Berkley and Penn.
Oak Grove 6th Grader: “I think that is pretty good.”
Oak Grove 6th Grader: “I learned to handle money, what to put in and out, to wait and be careful.”
Carlson: “That is why they did well, in the end they did better than the colleges. Because the colleges were making changes right away and we stayed tight.”
The stellar performance at Oak Grove earned the school headlines this week in the Washington Post, Yahoo News, and Wednesday a live business talk show on National Fox TV.
Oak Grove 6th Grader: “It will help us do stuff with our money, how to spend it, how to save it.”
The 6th grade-Grovers even fared well against the S&P. High and above some of Wall Street icons, all from a classroom along the river in Fargo.
And the math classes had such success with the investment project.
They will take the challenge again next year.
