Mount Pleasant, SC (CNN) - A very venomous snake could be on the loose in a South Carolina neighborhood. Residents of an apartment complex are being warned to watch where they step.

The Gaboon Viper; one of the most venomous in the world.

Lejohn Roberson– Snake Handler: "They're not very active. They sit and ambush prey, so it's not unlikely for them to be sitting for days in one spot without moving."

Friday, managers at Harbor Pointe Apartment Complex warned residents after discovering this skin, which they believe belongs to the viper, in nearby bushes. Experts say the viper that's possibly running around Mount Pleasant is about 3 ½ to 4 feet long. That fact had many on high alert as they walked around the apartment complex, Sunday afternoon.

Lejohn Roberson is one of only a few handlers in the area that has a Gaboon Viper. He says the most dangerous part of the viper is its bite. Once it latches on, it won't let go.

Reporter: "How venomous, poisonous, dangerous is this..?"

Lejohn Roberson: "I will put it in the top 10, easily. Might even be top five, depending on size and what type of bite you get that deliver as much venom as it can."

Raymond Convigton, an animal removal expert, says while the threat of the snake is around, folks need to be more cautious than normal.

Raymond Convigton - Animal Removal Expert: "Keep an eye on your feet until this is possibly caught and just monitor where you walk. Don't go into high densely-forest areas."
