FARGO – After striking a plea deal calling for a 25-year prison term, a man accused of a fatal stabbing near a grocery store here last month pleaded guilty Friday and testified against three other suspects who were arrested Thursday and charged with murder.
Wade Anthony Garrett, 19, was previously charged in the March 14 murder of 26-year-old Rolandas Devon House, which a witness had told police was linked to a drug-related theft.
Police were called shortly after midnight on March 14 to the scene of an apparent car crash at Cash Wise grocery store, 1401 33rd St. S., where they discovered House’s body about 100 yards from one of the cars in the crash.
A man detained at the scene told police House stole money and marijuana from Garrett during a drug deal at nearby West Acres Mall.
Three other people were charged Friday in Cass County District Court with murder in connection House’s death, accused of arranging with Garrett to rob House of the money he’d stolen from one of them, Alexander Dean Clapper, 19, of Moorhead.
During his plea hearing on Friday, Garrett testified that Alexander Clapper gave him the knife he used to stab House after Tamara Leigh Ann Clapper, 22, also of Moorhead, lured House out to the Cash Wise parking lot with a sham drug sale.
Garrett testified he stabbed House after chasing House with his car, then getting into a fistfight with House.
According to the terms of his plea deal, Garrett would be sentenced to 25 years with one year suspended. A formal sentencing date has not been set.
Prosecutors also asked Judge John Irby to require Garrett to continue cooperating with investigators as part of his sentence.
“We’re certainly pleased with the outcome of the case,” Cass County prosecutor Tristan Van de Streek said. “It was a well-investigated case. Mr. Garrett has a good attorney who took time to go over the evidence with him.”
Both Clappers were charged Thursday in Cass County District Court with Class AA felony murder, along with Arlen Dean Clapper, 46, of Dilworth.
Garrett testified Friday that Arlen Clapper was given some cash stolen from House in the alleged killing.
The Clappers were arrested in Valley City Thursday night and are being held in the Barnes County Jail. A Barnes County jail spokesperson said they were booked into the jail at about 10:40 p.m. Thursday.
Alexander Clapper is also charged with B felony delivery of marijuana.
Fargo police are holding a press conference at 11 a.m. to discuss new information on the March 14 homicide.
