West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Some fourth and fifth grade students said "good-bye" to their ponytails and learned what it's like to give.

Eight students at South Elementary had their hair chopped off in front of their cheering peers Friday afternoon.

They donated the hair to Locks of Love and Pantene to make wigs for cancer patients.

For some it was a fun thing to do, but for others it was more personal.

Apryl Haakenson/ Fourth-Grade Student: "I donated it because I knew that it would help people and mine can grow back."

Amanda Heidorn/ Fifth-Grade Student: "One of my mom's friends got cancer, and you know it just inspired me to do it."

Fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Lindemann coordinates this event each year.
