Oklahoma City, OK (WDAY TV) - Stephen Monk arrived at NDSU four years ago, eager to make history for the Bison wrestling program.

Monk had been to the NCAA Championships the last two years only to come up short of All-American status.

Monk cleared that final hurdle this weekend in Oklahoma City and in the process became the 2nd D-1 All American for the Bison.

Monk was terrific going 5-1 over the course of the three days, his only loss was to number one seed David Taylor, who had pinned everyone, except for Monk, who says taking 3rd was the payoff of a lot of hard work.

Steven Monk/ 2nd D-1 All-American for NDSU: β€œIt was a little bit of a burden especially coming up close the last couple of years but I knew I could do it, go out there, stay relaxed do, my thing, huge relief all the hard work I put in my whole life paid off on the biggest stage possible.”

Roger Kish/ NDSU Wrestling Coach: β€œI think that was his main goal since he stepped on campus to come here and be an All-American, he's put in his time and effort through his career here and got rewarded in a big time way that was good to see.”

Monk finished with a 36-2 record this year at NDSU, and racked up a total of 134 wins, 2nd most in Bison history.
