Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -There is a war going on in Barnesville.

And they have the pennies to prove it.

Mrs. Messer's kindergarten class started the Penny Wars in honor of 5-year-old Mikel Karels of Barnesville.

Mikel is in the class, but is at Mayo Clinic right now receiving treatment for cancer.

Over $1,200 has been raised in just a few days of the penny wars.

Classrooms and area businesses are all on board.

Mikel was just diagnosed shortly after the holidays.

A special monkey in honor of Mikel sits in the classroom and goes wherever the students go.

The kids try to facetime Mikel as much as they can.

Chris Messer, Mikel’s teacher: “Seemed like a fun way for all the kids to get involved the older kids really like the challenge and younger ones just really want to help Mikel.”

All of this is in preparation for a big benefit for Mikel, planned in Barnesville for Saturday, March 29.

And runners from Barnesville who are taking part in the Fargo Marathon are sponsoring "Miles for Mike" as another fundraiser for the 5-year-old.
