Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -A monumental space discovery by NASA takes our universe to a whole new world.

They've found 715 new planets.

All discovered by the Kepler space telescope, the most ever unveiled at a single time.

About 100 of them are close to Earth's size.

Before NASA's announcement, they had identified about 1,000 planets total, so this nearly doubles that.

Four of 715 are called "habitable” meaning they could support life.

Juan Cabanela, MSUM professor of physics and astronomy: “To be honest, we were expecting something like this. The Kepler space probe which has been up there hooting this part of the sky, this is what it was designed to do. I mean it was a very big splash but we were expecting something like this.”

The newly unveiled planets orbit 305 different stars.
