Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV) - It was a warm, bright spot in a sea of bitter cold.

Friday, the perfect combination of sunlight and holiday time off filled frozen lakes with ice anglers itching for a nice day to drop a line.

The buzz of augers constantly echoed around Big Detroit Lake as anglers enjoyed a rare sunny day in the 30s.

It's been bitterly cold all month, and these temperatures are expected to plunge again this weekend, so many still on vacation for the holidays took this window of opportunity to get out on the ice.

Eric Brainard- Fishing with Family: "Thought it would be a good time to get out and enjoy the weather; try to catch some fish."

For Eric Brainard and his four boys, it meant setting up chairs and soaking in the afternoon sun, fishing without a house.

Joel Brainard- Fishing Day: "You just have to be patient and wait for the fish to come up and just let it sit there."

Sarah Martinson says she and her family have been waiting for a decent day since they came up from Kansas to visit, so they went all out.

Sarah Martinson- Soaking in Sun: "We went sledding. We're going to go ice skating. We're going to go snowmobiling. We're doing ice fishing."

This December is shaping up to be one of the top 10 coldest on record. This is actually the first time all month the temperature has risen above freezing.

So for now, it's a perfect fishing day, even if the fish weren't biting.

Brainard: "Spend time with the kids; got a little time off for the holidays and it's good family time."

But it won't last long… The upcoming weekend could see wind chills of 60 below.

The last time it has been above freezing was November 29th.
