Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- The Red River Valley has several qualities that makes it a great sports haven, but if there's one quality that's overlooked are the great nicknames that the area teams has.
Every player, coach, and fan has a special bond with a team. But there are a few that have to stick up for theirs maybe just a little bit more. Taking a look around the region there are plenty of Original Nicknames that you won't find anywhere else!
Tom Knowlton/Cobber: "Fear the ear, odd mascot, odd motto, who's going to fear a piece of corn?"
Mathew Totay/Central Cass Squirrel: "We are small animals we like to compete against these big schools with huge names, we are squirrels, we like having fun with it."
Chase Morlock/Moorhead Spud: "I love being a Spud, growing up it's what you always wanted to be, a varsity athlete, to be a spud."
Just how special are these nicknames, take a look... The Cobbers are the only one in the country to represent the Cob... The Squirrels are the only high school to represent the fiesty critter, the Nuggets are also all alone across the nation to represent their mascot and the Spuds share their name with only one other school across the United States.
Aaron Lein/Spud: "It's an honor to be the only Spud in the area, it's a great feeling to be unique."
Jeff Christianson/Hawley Nugget: "We started in elementary school, come out here everyday saw the older guys with their gold helmets with Nuggets on the side, I pointed it out and said that's what I'm gonna do."
Bryce Hentges/Cobber: "I like it, it's something you wouldn't think would be a mascot, but you learn to embrace it and roll with it and learn to love it."
Akex Ames/Hawley Nugget: "Being a Nugget is definitely one of the proudest things I've done in my life. I dreamed of being a Nugget."
The one other team nicknamed Spuds is a private school in California.
