Weather to be remember on Minnesota's unofficial holidayLake Ida, Minn. (WDAY Sports) - They call it an unofficial holiday in the state of Minnesota. Of course I'm talking about the fishing opener. It began at midnight and has been helped by some of the best weather we've seen in recent years. One man who was working on this so-called holiday was our own resident outdoorsman Dom Izzo and he has more on this story.

The best weather the Minnesota fishing opener had in years was the backdrop today as anglers came out early and often to take their first crack at catching some walleye.
“We only fished two spots; we caught 8 walleyes and 2 northerns. There were really cooperative today, usually you can't buy a fish on the opener. Everything fell into place which is good.”
“You like to go out when it's nice and enjoyable. It's nice and peaceful. Do something with your son. They were hitting and missed a few like we usually do, but we got something to eat tonight.”
“We could’ve got a lot more, little hit and miss. I had to drag dad out of the house one day.”
Getting people out today wasn't a problem, in fact you got here late then you were going to have to wait.
“Never seen this access this full before. Definitely want more than one, get close to the limit got a couple secret spots.”
“It was beautiful calm morning, couldn't ask for a better opener. The fish we were fishing deep, got a couple walleyes right away and they were deep.”
While some anglers will have smiles on their faces, and others will be disappointed, there's one thing that everyone can agree upon today. The weather will be the best memory of this opener, rather than the fish caught.
Dom tells us that most everyone out there was moving around to find the best spots.
